Soma

Written by: Charles Miller and Sean Cook
Directed by: Anna Fox
Presented by: Adrian Jeckells for London School of Musical Theatre

A darkly comic tale set in an English town many of us will recognise, a place where life happily ticks along; lived out in brand new kitchens, landscaped gardens, and a quaint high street. All set against the now ubiquitous backdrop of social media, 24 hour news coverage, and advertising. Most of which is ignoring what some would argue is the most pressing issue facing humanity. Climate change. We meet an array of townsfolk, all striving to fulfil their dreams of security and love. However, the river has its own agenda. And the only person who seems to have noticed this is Shannon, the town drunk.

A humorous comment on how humanity is sleepwalking into a climate catastrophe, SOMA does not preach. Rather it simply portrays the fantasy of modern life; a fantasy that tells us that, in spite of increasingly dramatic events happening around the world, all will be okay and life will go on as it always has. It highlights that parochial quality of human nature that looks out the window and says: ‘See, the world hasn’t ended.’With a witty and heartfelt score, and a company of the newest musical theatre talent to graduate from one of London’s most prestigious schools, you are in for a treat. Be the first to see this groundbreaking new musical.
