“Is it better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven?”
“I am a freedom fighter,
A champion of the underdog,
Liberator of the persecuted.
So where is my parade?”
The seventeenth century and present day are seamlessly intertwined in Erin Shields’s fiercely engaging, irreverently funny and deeply moving play, inspired by John Milton's epic poem about the cosmic battle between good and evil. From the depths of Hell, the fallen angel Satan plots her revenge against the Almighty with a devious plan to corrupt his two newest creations-the delicate new creatures called “humans", otherwise known as Adam and Eve. Paradise Lost turns Heaven and Hell upside down by questioning the reasons of the universe, the slow process of evolution and the freedom of knowledge. The debate over right and wrong has never been so satisfying.
