Gao Kao

Presented by: The Whisper Current Productions

They say this is the best time of our life.

They are lying.

In a system where over a million students compete for a future, every second matters. One mark can separate tens of thousands. There is no time to rest, no time to breathe — only time to study.

In Gao Kao, the classroom becomes a battleground.
Teachers become interrogators.
Exams become acts of violence.

A student finds his only escape in a window — a small, distant glimpse of something beyond the system. But when even looking outside is seen as a threat, where can he go?

As pressure mounts, reality fractures. Language turns against him. Logic abandons him. Survival becomes the only goal — until even survival loses its meaning.

Combining physical theatre, stylised combat, and immersive sound, Gao Kao is a raw and unflinching portrayal of a generation raised to succeed at any cost.

This is not a story about failure.

This is a story about what success demands
