Good typography is invisible, as the old saying goes. A lot of us want to be good... but who wants to be invisible? This workshop focuses on exactly the opposite. Not making bad typography, but focusing on the visible by using the unique qualities of type as a material rather than a tool. Thinking of glyphs as physical shapes which can be moulded, bent or stretched opens up vast creative possibilities: type is the clay, not the potter’s wheel. This approach is particularly relevant to branding or a more artistic practice, but can also be used to gain perspective on type & graphic design.
Learning objectives
Lettering — Gain insights into creative lettering techniques based on calligraphy and expressive typography.
Branding — Learn how brand strategy influences typographic design and how to infuse letters with brand personality.
Typeface Design — Discover key typographic principles such as optical corrections.

Participants will gain tools and frameworks to build typographic shapes, and a refined piece of lettering work. The best context to apply these skills is branding, (expressive lettering context also works). They will have heightened awareness about typographic compositions, and feel confident tackling type-related briefs.
This workshop is for anyone who has a passion for typography and letterforms. Who have at least a basic knowledge of typography (principles, hierarchy, basic shapes). And is an analog workshop (no type design software required).
Class size is limited to 16 students for an engaging experience.
