From small magazines, to worker-owned journalist cooperatives, to email newsletters, it feels like we’ve never had so many ways to enjoy great writing by independent publishers. This event brings together four of Britain’s most distinctive independent magazines for an evening of readings that transfer their stories from the page onto the stage.

Each magazine will present two stories, read by their authors, to give a sense of the publication’s character. From investigative journalism, to first-person storytelling, to strange fiction, these magazines are doing very different things, but they’re carving out their identities by putting the written word first.

Come along to get a quick hit of these great magazines, and if you like what you see, pick up a copy of their latest issue direct from the publishers. We’ll also leave plenty of time for hanging around and talking afterwards.

Die Quieter Please

An independent literary magazine based in London, Die Quieter Please publishes short fiction and poetry in biannual issues that are based around open, abstract themes. Their third issue, themed ‘Silent Mass’, was published at the end of 2025.

Dispatch

Launched in 2025, Dispatch is a digital magazine that publishes two stories per week, reporting from the world’s peripheries. That could mean a trip to the longest-running inhabited peace camp in the world, or an encounter with the amateur shamans promising salvation on one of Ireland’s ayahuasca retreats. Whatever it is, it will help you to see the world from a fresh perspective.

The Fence

Billing itself as, “the UK’s only magazine”, The Fence is a quarterly title with a great eye for a story. A typical issue combines gossipy insider insights, serious reportage, gorgeous two-colour illustrations, and a decent chunk of fiction to deliver a magazine that’s always tremendously fun.

Piscine

The youngest magazine on the bill, the first issue of Piscine launched in Glasgow in November 2025. Its editors work full-time in the city’s bars and restaurants, and the magazine is dedicated to promoting the best new arts and culture coming out of Scotland, while also complaining about the evils of working in hospitality.
