An exhibition displaying the drawing books of Peter S Smith

Peter is a member of the Society of Wood Engravers and Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers(RE). His paintings and prints are exhibited in the UK and overseas with works in public and private collections, including Tate Britain, the Ashmolean Oxford and the Fitzwilliam Cambridge.

In September 2006, Piquant Editions published a book about his printmaking called “The way I see it….” With an Introductory essay by Calvin Seerveld.

He currently has a studio at the St Bride Foundation, Bride Lane, London, where he also teaches wood engraving workshops.

At first, I used books of varying sizes, with drawings that were often studies for other works. From about 1980, I found a small drawing book to be more practical for daily use. These drawings became more focused on circumstances which I find visually interesting in their own right. However, some do become starting points for prints or paintings.

MJ Long (1939-2018) designed this display cabinet. In one of our conversations last year about the visual arts and drawing, she encouraged me to exhibit these books.

Please Note: There will be events taking place in the Layton Room during the week which limits access to the exhibition. Please check with St Bride by phone or email to check before planning to visit.
