Using typography to create engaging editorial design, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to combine literary wit with visual storytelling. Join Astrid in an immersive journey of discovery inspired by Ambrose Bierce’s timeless satirical work, The Devil’s Dictionary. Through a combination of lectures, hands-on exercises, individual and group discussions, participants will gain insight into editorial design principles while honing their skills in crafting compelling visual narratives.

Learning Objectives

Editorial Design Fundamentals — Gain insights into the principles of editorial design, including layout, typography and composition.

Visual Storytelling — Learn how to translate abstract ideas and definitions into captivating visual narratives that evoke emotions and provoke thought.

Conceptual Thinking — Develop the ability to conceptualise and convey complex concepts visually.

Hierarchy and Composition — Understand how to establish hierarchy, balance, and compositional harmony through typographic elements.

Layout — Learn strategies to integrate typography seamlessly into layout designs, creating a cohesive reading experience.

Typography — Explore the art of using typography as a tool to enhance the mood and tone of the definitions and designs. Practice typographic design through interactive exercises, translating definitions into visually compelling narratives.

Collaborative Critique — Engage in peer critiques and group discussions to refine design choices, encouraging constructive feedback and fostering creative growth.

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of editorial design principles, harnessing the potential of typography as a versatile tool to bring content to life through captivating, unexpected and insightful editorial designs. Insights into the delicate balance between content and form, whilst infusing their own creative expression into visual narratives.

This workshop is for anyone who has a passion for books, typography and the construction of narratives. Who have a basic knowledge of editorial design (typography, pagination etc). Participants should bring along a laptop computer and have Adobe InDesign installed.

Class size is limited to 16 students for an engaging experience.

Accessibility

Workshops will be held at ground floor level with step free access. There will be the opportunity to visit the reading room which is not step free but has a platform lift. You can access our building at street-level via Salisbury Court and St Bride's Passage.

About Astrid Stavro

Astrid is a globally recognised and award-winning creative director with over two decades of leadership in design. Her goal is to create idea-driven work that is both emotionally engaging and meticulously crafted. From her London studio, she and her team collaborate with a wide range of brands and institutions across the cultural and commercial sectors. Previously, Astrid was a partner at Pentagram and co-founder of the design agency Atlas. She currently serves as President of the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) and has been a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) since 2010.
