Last Days: The London Showing
Conducted by: David Cowan
Directed by: Tim Albery
Produced by: The National Opera Studio and Opera North
The Young Artists of the National Opera Studio perform Last Days, devised and directed by Tim Albery, to mark the centenary of the end of World War I. We are taken from the gaiety of pre-war Europe’s nightclubs into an apocalyptic vision of the War’s outbreak, towards increasingly stormy, raw or mournful songs and texts from Berg, Satie, E E Cummings, Elgar, Butterworth and Gurney, among others.
Members of the Orchestra of Opera North and the next generation of operatic stars bring these powerful and affecting songs to new life under the baton of David Cowan, in this special one-off London performance.
The National Opera Studio has been at the forefront of opera training in the UK for 40 years. Its internationally renowned Young Artists’ Programme takes on twelve singers and four répétiteurs each year, who have the potential to be the leading artists of their generation. Singers who have started their careers at the Studio include Gerald Finley OC CBE, Lesley Garrett CBE, Susan Bullock CBE, David Butt Philip, Duncan Rock and Katerina Karnéus, and répétiteur alumni can be found on the music staff of the greatest opera houses in the world.
This performance takes place as part of the First World War Centenary series led by Imperial War Museums
