Join us to celebrate the publication of David Roberts’ new book, We Are Your Children. Touching on major moments in the story of the fight for LGBTQ+ rights including the Stonewall Uprising, the first Gay Pride Rally and the dazzling history of drag and the ballroom scene, We Are Your Children is a wide-ranging and inclusive account of a multifaceted movement, with detailed and characterful colour artwork. The main body of the book focuses on the last 50 years of the twentieth century in the UK and USA and the events and people that laid the foundation for all that has followed.

David will be in conversation with Hattie Collins and discuss how he navigated the challenges and advantages of using illustration to tell historical stories. They’ll delve into the choices around composition and content in telling those stories visually, and the challenges in finding and choosing which stories to tell.

David Roberts is a hugely talented and versatile artist and author, earning great acclaim for his distinctive illustrations. He began his career in fashion illustration, and his sharp eye for form and composition is evidenced throughout his work. His books include collaborations with his sister Lynn on retellings of several classic fairy stories. Their book Little Red was shortlisted for the 2005 CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal. David’s first collaboration with Julia Donaldson, Tyrannosaurus Drip, was published in 2007 by Macmillan, and since then they have worked together on several other picture books. David is also the illustrator of the New York Times bestselling Questioneers series including Rosie Revere, Engineer and Ada Twist, Scientist written by Andrea Beaty. The latter has been made into a Netflix animation series for which David received an Emmy as Executive Producer. He is the illustrator of Julian Clary’s fiction series The Bolds and has recently worked with Richaed Ayoade on The Fairy Tale Fan Club. His first non-fiction book Suffragette: The Battle for Equality, is an exquisitely illustrated history of the women’s suffrage movement, which has been a passion of David’s since his school days.

Hattie Collins is an award-winning journalist, broadcaster and published author. She currently hosts PROUD, a radio show on Apple Music 1 which celebrates established and emerging LGBTQIA+ musicians. Specialising in, but not limited to, popular music, film and LGBTQIA+ culture, Hattie has interviewed global superstars for publications including Elle, i-D, The Face, Arena Homme+, The Sunday Times and the Guardian. She is the author of the Penderyn Prize nominated book This Is Grime and has co/ghostwritten seven books to date, including two Sunday Times bestsellers.
